The P.E. curriculum provides children with learning opportunities through the medium of movement and contributes to their overall development by helping them to lead full, active and healthy lives.

There are six strands in the P.E. curriculum:

• Athletics

• Dance

• Gymnastics

• Games

• Outdoor and adventure activities

• Aquatics

In Moneenroe NS we deliver a broad and balanced PE curriculum that caters for the needs and interests of all pupils. Our dedicated teaching staff delivers PE lessons weekly, along with extracurricular activities. Moneenroe NS ensures that all pupils are provided with a minimum of 60 minutes of timetabled physical education each week. Teachers organise a standard timetable to ensure a balanced programme is taught. Feedback is provided to parents during annual Parent Teacher meetings.

Children’s achievements are noted on our sporting achievements wall. Each class take active breaks throughout the day. Our dedicate staff also provide 30 minutes of exercise before school begins. This has proved to benefits

children’s energy levels and concentration coming to school. For more information please see our Physical Education plan.

Athletics:

Kilkenny sports and recreation team came out to our school in term 2 and demonstrated a range of athletics movements/games to our teachers. We received equipment for 6 weeks and a member from KSRP will return in 6 weeks and see what improvements were made.

Races day takes place in Term 3.

Dance:

After discussion with fellow colleagues we decided to focus on the strand of dance for this academic year. Guided dance via Go Noodle takes place in the smaller classes. Irish dancing takes places during Seachtain na Gaeilge for senior classes. Lisa Coogan from Royal Dance academy will demonstrate 5 lessons in April for all pupils in our school. Class teachers will then model teach dance lesson for a period of 4 weeks after. We have requested

in-school support from Oide also to upskill on this strand.

Gymnastics:

Gymnastics takes place for all pupils in Term 3. Lisa teaches our children and staff basic movements involved in Gymnastics in a safe manner. Gymnastics mats were purchased by our school this year.

Games:

Moneenroe NS staff teaches Hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, soccer, tag rugby, unihoc, basketball, Olympic handball, volleyball and badminton as part of our PE lessons. Noel Devlin from Leinster rugby provides rugby session for 6 weeks in Term 2. Bernard O Mara from Cricket Leinster provides 6 weeks of cricket sessions in term 1. William Kinsella provides soccer coaching in Term 3.

Outdoor and Adventure Activities:

Moneenroe NS staff teach orienteering to all pupils in Term 3. Our Active school committee created an orienteering trail for all classes this year. We hope to compete in an outdoor orienteering trail in Jenkinstown woods this year.

Aquatics:

3 rd – 6 th class pupils receive 9 weeks of swimming in Graiguecullen every year in Term 1.

Junior - 2nd class complete the LAND PAWS programme.
